creative games: a guide to style, design and imagination

Creative games: a guide to style, design and imagination

In some games you don't have to beat anyone. Instead, you design a character's look, furnish a room, draw, compose tunes or cook imaginary dishes. Allgirlsgames explains how these genres work, what they teach and how to choose a game calmly, keeping an eye on the age rating, in-game purchases and chatting with strangers. We write for players of any age and for parents who want to know what their kids are into.

There's no wrong answer in a creative game. There's an idea, a few attempts and something you want to share.

Your first character look in five steps

  1. Idea

Start with a question, not the buttons: who is this character and what do they do? A traveler, a cook, a musician, an inventor — a short backstory will tell you what the look should be.

  2. A three-color palette

Pick a main color, a second one to go with it and one bright accent. A small palette keeps the look unified and stops the details from clashing.

  3. Shape

Decide on the silhouette: loose clothes or fitted, big hair or short. A silhouette is recognizable from a distance, before any of the small details are visible.

  4. Detail

Add one memorable detail: a scarf, a badge, unusual shoes or a pattern on the fabric. One well-chosen touch works better than a handful of random ones.

  5. Save and share

Save the result and, if you like, show it to family or friends. Before posting it online, make sure the image doesn't show your name or any other personal information.

About this reference in brief

Can I play games here?

No. We don't host games or files and don't provide download links. This site only explains how creative genres work and what to look for when choosing a game. Install games from your device's official app store.

Are you a store or a game studio?

No. We sell nothing, don't make games and aren't affiliated with game developers. Allgirlsgames is an independent reference, and we don't publish prices, rankings or reviews.

Are creative games meant for just one kind of player?

No. Designing looks, rooms, pictures and tunes is fun for everyone: kids and adults, beginners and experienced players. We don't sort games by who they're supposedly for, and we don't think anyone is expected to like just one thing.

How do I know if a game is right for my child?

Check the age rating on the game's app store page: PEGI in Europe, ESRB in North America. Then turn on parental controls to limit purchases, playtime and chat, and try playing together the first time.

About the project

Allgirlsgames is an independent reference about creative games. We focus on genres where making things is the point: stylist games and character creators, room and house design, life sims, drawing, music, cooking and building sandboxes.

A different website once ran on this domain, and later unrelated spam pages appeared on it. None of that content has been kept or reproduced. The project's name comes from the domain.

We don't host games or files, don't name specific games and don't compile rankings. Our goal is to explain how a genre works and help you choose a game on your own, without rushing.

What we rely on

  • PEGI — age category descriptions
  • ESRB — rating descriptions
  • App store help pages on parental controls

We describe genres and techniques in general terms. Every game has its own menus, button names and purchase terms, and they change over time, so check the details in the game's own help section and on its app store page.
